Care of drinking horns

Trinkhorn

Cleaning & care of drinking horns, call horns and drinking horn cups

We are referring in this text to a drinking horn. However, the same tips also apply to the call horn and drinking horn cups.

Most of our drinking horns come from Brazil and Nigeria. The horns up to 3dl come from Brazil, the larger horns come from Nigeria. These are domestic cattle from livestock farming. The horn used is therefore a by-product from meat production.

It takes many steps to turn the raw material into a finished drinking horn. First the horn is hollowed out, cleaned on the inside and outside, sanded on the outside and lined with a food-safe varnish on the inside. Drinking honey wine from a drinking horn is a pleasure. To ensure that the drinking horn can be used for as long as possible, the following tips should be observed:
  • The drinking horn is not suitable for acidic drinks.
  • The drinking horn is not suitable for carbonated drinks.
  • Do not wash the drinking horn in the dishwasher.
  • Do not soak the drinking horn in the water for hours.
  • Do not expose the drinking horn to sun, frost, salt, alkalis, water and temperature fluctuations for a long time.

Best practice for the cleaning:
  • Rinse your drinking horn with lukewarm water immediately after use.
  • A little mild detergent can be used if the horn is very dirty.
  • After cleaning, rub the horn dry with a cloth and set it up with the opening facing down.
  • If an animal smell occurs after prolonged use, it can help to use cleansing agents that are also used for cleaning dentures.
